A celestial presence
Last Sunday, art lovers from as far away as Dublin gathered at the house of Pirate friends Willem and Doutsje for a viewing of Willem’s lyrical paintings of Mayo. Tea, wine and delicious quiche and cakes were served, the craíc was great and an excellent time was had by one and all. The main topic of conversation was our hosts’ imminent departure for Holland, for an exhibition of Willem’s work, and then France where plans are afoot for a book about their extraordinary garden, aptly known as the Achill Secret Garden.

Willem van Goor staat hier op de foto met Brian Sheridan, een zeer oude heer. Brian is een van de laatste Ierse Protestanten op Achill. Toen de Pirates bezit namen van het huis waren er nog een paar Protestanten verdeeld over drie kerken van The Church of Ireland in de Achill Area: Achill Sound, Inishbiggle en Dugort. Nu is alleen St Thomas in Dugort nog open en zijn de Ierse Protestanten op één hand te tellen. Brian behoorde voor WWII tot The Bright Young Things in Dublin en Co. Wicklow. Volgens de overlevering was hij altijd in voor Anybody for Tennis? en A Bit Of Innocent Fun. Onlangs is er een documentaire uitgezonden op TG4 de Ierstalige TVzender over de geschiedins van de Protestantse Gemeenschap op Achill waarin hij uitgebreid aan het woord komt.
