In the hayday of the absentee landlords their farmers were largely self-sufficient. Not much money went around. Most things and services were paid for in kind. These walls were most likely build by local farmers as an obligatory service to the landlord. This economic system collapsed during the famine years of the nineteenth century when self-sufficiency wasn't possible anymore. In a letter to Lord Palmerston Marx complimented him on the building jobs for pay he organized. Many a Folly and wall thus build is still standing.
