According to people who know about these things, these are the signs of badgers attempting to dig up the front garden. For years there have badgers in the back garden, although nobody ever sees them. Personally I was beginning to think that they were mythical, much like the leprachauns.

The front lawn is regularly torn open by badgers and foxes as they look for fat crawlies who lurk in the warm, moist, nutritious soil. The mark of the badger's paw is three lines.
I have been told that the fox and the badger are big enemies, still they manage to live together on a mere 2,5 acre ....
