Green-Fingered Pirates

There's lots of land surrounding the Pirates' house in Polranny. This means that the garden is a hive of activity, even in the dead of winter. Here is the latest haul of flowering shrubs, the result of a recent raid on the local garden centre.

The Pirates are in luck. One of the Pirate's friends, photographer Fran Rosser, works in Horkans' Garden Center in Castlebar. Tips and good offers and even free plants and plant feeds abound. Horkans has a big Garden Center outside Castlebar next to the National Museum of Country Life. In the old days Horkans used to have but a small shop. It sold small pets like birds and mice but it also was the shop where the winemakers went for their stuff. That's how the Pirates came to know the shop: as amateur winemakers. Pirates were making wine out of practically everything the garden offered: fruits, blooms and leaves even. It was not always a great succes. But nobody ever died from drinking the brew.

Well... one year the bottles exploded and somebody found a visiting tribe of seriously intoxicated mice in the kitchen

When the house was burgled the burglers not only took the sound system, my mothers old laundry basket and some electrical equipment, they also took the blackberry wine that was brewing. It had been a very good blackberry year and we were right sorry that wine was gone! That the burglars liked the wine too was proved by the evidence of an empty gallon jar at the entrance of the driveway.
